I AM 87 and my wife is 85 and so we are very old age pensioners in this district.

We live in a four-bedroom house in Marlow not from choice but because of two reasons.

Our family have grown up, married and were unable to find appropriate accommodation at a sensible price in Marlow.

Secondly it is because us oldies, who, similarly cannot find appropriate alternative accommodation in Marlow are, it seems, condemned to continue to live in this house.

If we lived in a flat, for example with five wage earners, our local tax would be very much less, but despite allegations of "fair assessment of local taxes" it seems that, as distinct from national income tax, no consideration is given to the level of income of local taxpayers includiong of course the pensioners.

Surely this is a) illogical; and b) quite undemocratic and c) totally ignoring the fact that, since national income tax information is so readily available to the officials then the additional administration of "local taxation" is top heavy and uneconomic!

Surely the Liberal Democrats have a valid democratic and equality point in committing themselves, should they be elected, to relating local taxation to income. It would reduce bureaucracy, and it would be a much fairer relevance to utilisation of civic resources as well as a sensible application of decency and democracy for many people in our community.
