A COUPLE found a 1964 edition of the Bucks Free Press under a wardrobe which broke the news of a town centre revamp on its front page.

Neil and Sarah Swanston, of Suffield Road, High Wycombe, were redecorating their spare room as a nursery ready for the arrival of their first child in March.

When Mr Swanston, 27, ripped out the fitted wardrobe, he found the ageing paper under some lino.

The headline "Yes at last to Wycombe's big face-lift" boasts of a state-of-the-art 1960s revamp of High Wycombe town centre creating a parallel with the modern changes to the town and the Eden development, which is currently being built.

Mr Swanston, who works for Cressex telecoms firm WIN, said: "I was excited to find it. I am fascinated by history. I wasn't at school, it has developed in fairly recent years. I am interested by development and change, and that goes with my technology interest as well."

Mr Swanston also used to work as a broadcast journalist for BBC Nottingham, and said he was also interested by the dated style of the paper, which used words like "lady" and "chaps".

The Swanstons have only lived in High Wycombe since August, having moved from Maidenhead to the larger house because Mrs Swanston, 27, was expecting. Mr Swanston said he now wants to rip out the similar fitted wardrobes in their own bedroom.

He added: "I want to see what's there. But I haven't been allowed to get at them yet. Maybe after the baby's born."
