A PUPIL from Claytons School in Bourne End has seen her name up in lights after winning a school competition to design a Christmas light for The Parade.

Eleven-year-old Elizabeth Bradshaw, of Fieldhead Gardens, Bourne End, said she was delighted she had the honour of turning on her design on Saturday, December 10th, along with the other Christmas lights in Bourne End, at the official switch-on.

Judges from Bourne End and Cookham Rotary Club and Wooburn and Bourne End Parish Council, who sponsored the lights, said they chose her design because it was practical and bold.

The eight finalists' designs can be seen on display at Bourne End Library in Wakeman Road.

Rotarian Cyril Watts, 80, of Strathcona Close, Flackwell Heath, said: "It is the second time we have run this competition and we are hoping it will become an annual tradition.

"It would be lovely to see all of the shops in The Parade covered with personalised children's lights."

Elizabeth's design can be seen hanging outside Crocks and Crystal.

Rotary has also honoured Mr Watts as the longest serving executive member of Bourne End Community Association, by inviting him to become a member of the Paul Harris Fellowship.

Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1905 and members who contribute "exceptional service" to the club and the community are invited to become fellows.

The retired aviation consultant said: "I have been an executive member of the community association for 43 years and a rotarian for 25 years.

"I was absolutely delighted and speechless."
