THE Ridgeway is one of the oldest 'roads' in Europe, dating from at least the Bronze Age 4,000 years ago.

The original road ran 250 miles from near Lyme Regis to the Wash.

Today The Ridgeway National Trail is an 85-mile route from Overton Hill near Avebury to Ivinghoe Beacon, much of it following the ancient chalk ridge route used by prehistoric man.

A new edition of The Ridgeway National Trail Companion has been published by the Countryside Agency (£3.95).

It is a guide to accommodation, facilities and services for anyone wanting to explore The Ridgeway on foot, horse or cycle.
