RESIDENTS are urged to give the best present they can this Christmas the gift of life.

Blood donors who have been invited to attend December donor sessions are urged by the National Blood Service (NBS) to try and make it.

And people who have never given blood before are also being encouraged to come forward.

Louise Coxon, NBS spokeswoman for Buckinghamshire, said: "All of our December sessions are crucial in helping to maintain healthy stocks during the festive period."

Ms Coxon explains that the demand for one of the products taken from blood actually increases over the Christmas period hence the urgent need for donations.

She said: "Just before Christmas Day, the demand for platelets actually increases because hospitals try to transfuse platelets to cancer patients so that they can spend a greater part of the Christmas holiday period at home with their families.

"Even on Christmas Day and Boxing Day there will be patients who will be rushed into hospital who will need to receive an emergency blood transfusion to help save their lives.

"The lifesaving blood products will only be there thanks to the support of blood donors."
