ILLEGAL parking is still going on in High Wycombe Cornmarket despite claims that new signs would get rid of the ticketing hell.

Ten £60 fines were issued on Sunday alone in just the second weekend since new warning signs have been put up.

Parking bosses gave into calls for better signage so drivers knew they couldn't dump their cars in the pedestrian area. Two new signs were put up as a result, reading "Pedestrian Zone, At any time".

But on Sunday afternoon, a handful of cars were parked in Cornmarket and attendants from Bucks County Council were out ticketing them.

Midweek watched as several angry drivers returned to their cars to find tickets on their windscreens.

Jerry Hounslow, 53, was gobsmacked at getting a fine. He said he didn't look up at the sign and that it wasn't clear at all.

He said: "There are half a dozen cars parked here and it seemed quite sensible. I don't think it is clear there are cars parked on both sides of the road and there are no double yellow lines.

"It is difficult to park in the centre and it is ridiculous."

At 2.50pm on Sunday five cars were still parked in Cornmarket.

The new signs have been placed outside HSBC bank and the Pepperpot building on opposite sides of the walkway.

Parking has always been illegal in the area but cars are allowed to drop people off and pick them up.

Anne-Marie Goodbody, parking services manager at the council, said people who didn't recognise the signs didn't know their Highway Code.

She said: "I don't know what else we can do because the law prescribes the signs we have to put up. We have to follow the ones prescribed by the Department of Transport.

"Some people do know their Highway Code and understand the no waiting sign. But people who don't know their Highway Code and don't know the meaning of the logo, have a serious problem because it is a national logo."

Drivers can still get their fine reduced to £30 if they pay within two weeks.
