THE Liberal Democrats are winning over voters in Wycombe, a party peer said after a visit to the constituency.

Lord Dholakia, a former president of the party, said: “People are, for the first time, saying ‘oh yes, we saw your leader on the television, you are the party which is for a change and we are delighted to support you’.”

He said: “I think I only met about a couple of people who are not convinced.”

Yet he said he expected more people to change their minds after tonight’s final televised leaders’ debate.

Party leader Nick Clegg’s appearance on the previous two debates has massively improved the Lib Dems’ ranking in opinion polls.

Lord Dholakia met voters in High Wycombe yesterday in support of candidate Steve Guy.

He said: “If we can get our supporters out, if those who have not made up their mind would support us, then I have no doubt at all that we will make a tremendous show in High Wycombe.”

He said the Lib Dems were the only party to spell out how the public debt would be cut and said the party would let more decisions be made about the NHS at a local level.

The party has finished third behind Labour in every poll since 1997 by at least ten points.

This has led to a battle between the two parties for the alternative vote in a seat that has not changed hands from the Conservatives for 49 years.
