TRAVELLERS camped in Amersham have today been served with an eviction notice – having been told to move from the same site last year.

They moved onto land at the top of Whielden Street at some point over the weekend.

The same group had been camped there last year – leading to the town council building an earth wall around the field.

A gap was left in it to allow access to the field, with a post due to be installed to prevent vehicles getting on to the site.

But the post was never put in place, leading to the travellers returning.

Gary Brewer of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Gypsy and Travellers Service said: “They were served with a notice this morning under section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to vacate the land by 8am on Tuesday.

“We know the family, they have been there before. They were OK when they were served this morning.”

Mr Brewer said if the travellers do not comply with the order, the Service will have to apply to a magistrate's court for a summons to evict them.

Chris Schweir of Buckinghamshire County Council's Highways team said: “In view of what happened, we will look to see if a post is required to prevent further entry onto the land.”
