FUNDRAISERS from a High Wycombe university toasted a towering success after a 208-mile charity cycle ride to Paris.

A dozen students and employees from Buckinghamshire New University completed their ride to the Eiffel Tower after pedalling for four days – cycling 67 miles on the last day alone.

The energy-sapping cross-channel challenge was in aid of Bucks Students’ Union’s Raise and Give nominated charities for 2009-10.

Student Dan Sumnall, 21, studying BA (Hons) Sports Management and Rugby Studies, said the sight of the Eiffel Tower had kept the team going on the final day.

Dan, from Windsor, said: “We did 67 miles on our last day, which was the longest stretch of the trip, and the last ten or 20 miles were tough but we could see the Eiffel Tower for most of it so that provided plenty of motivation.”

Michael Paxman, Volunteering Co-ordinator at Bucks New University, said the final ride through Paris had been ‘quite hairy’.

He said: “The traffic was extremely busy going through Paris and we had a few people who had picked up injuries but we all helped each other and made it to the end.”

The team were raising money for Berks, Oxon and Bucks Air Ambulance, Desborough Play Den, Learn As One, Marjorie Nash Cat Rescue, Teenage Cancer Trust and Wycombe Winter Night Shelter.

They hope to raise up to £4,000. To sponsor the team go to www.bucksstudent.com/cycletoparis.
