FOOTBALL fans packed pubs, offices and living rooms across Buckinghamshire this afternoon for England's crunch World Cup match against Slovenia.

High Wycombe was a sea of red and white flags, wigs and shirts with noisy vuvuzela horns providing the soundtrack.

The Litten Tree, Falcon and O'Neill's pubs were amongst the busy venues. Fans in O'Neill's stood for the national anthem and roared their support as the teams lined up - and roared when England won 1-0.

Danny Foster, 28, from Loudwater, said: "Thank god, I can breathe again now.

"We managed to progress without playing that well but hopefully we improve next time and show the world what we can do."

Estate agent Steve Harnett, 43, said: "My heart was in my mouth.

"Someone has to win it so we have as much chance as anybody else."

Mark Killingback, 48, was amongst those watching the game at The Charles Dickens in Beaconsfield.

He said: "It was a brillaint performance though there could have been more goals.

"I was so nervous in the second half I thought I might have to change my pants."

Peter Stubbs, 48, was given the afternoon off from his building job to watch the game.

He said: "We are through and that's the main thing. I thought we played all right - Milner was very good.

At half-time England stood 1-0 up. Welsh fan Wyn Williams said: "They are playing a lot better than the other night and deserve to be in front.

"I think the next goal is crucial. I want England to win and go through but I don't want them to win the tournament because they'll never shut up!"

High Wycombe fan Kenny Mitchell, 50, predicted a 3-0 win for England before the kick off.

He said: "I think it will be nervy at times but I think Terry and Defoe will score to send us through."

Mark Killingback, 48, was amongst those watching the game at The Charles Dickens.

He said: "I reckon we are going to scrape a 1-0 win. It's been nothing to write about so far.

"I think Crouch should be playing. They haven't bonded as a team but we've still got a chance."

Many are expected to have taken the day off to watch the 3pm clash against Slovenia, which England must win to reach the second round.

John Lewis in High Wycombe has put up bunting around a television for staff to cheer on England.

Marketing manager Dave Quinton said staff would make up the 90 minutes at other times.

“Partners can ask their line manager to have 90 minutes off to watch any of the World Cup games, because we have 37 different nationalities working here.

“We will still have people on the shop floor, not everyone is interested in the football, but we imagine the store will be quite quiet between around 2pm and 5pm.”

Tracey Badrick, of Sainsbury’s in Beaconsfield, said: “There's a big widescreen TV in the canteen upstairs and the company policy is staff just have to let the managers know in advance that they want to watch it.”

Wycombe District Council spokesman Becky Wotherspoon said: “Staff have to apply to their Managers to take flexi-leave or annual leave if they want to watch the match.

“Managers will be ensuring service levels are not affected while the game is on.”

Bed factory Hypnos, based in Longwick Road in Princes Risborough, has set up a projector in the board room.
