THE 155th Marlow Regatta took place at Dorney Lake at the weekend – with both of the town's secondary schools putting in strong performances.

Crews from around the area and including Marlow Rowing Club competed at the 2012 Olympic Rowing venue on Saturday and Sunday.

Great Marlow School and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School contested races along with Eton College, Windsor Boys School and Radley.

On Sunday a large number of university and foreign crews race over 1,000 meters in preparation for Henley Royal.

Tigre Rowing Club, Galway Rowing Club and Salisbury School from the United States gave the domestic entry a run for its money and all were victorious in their respective events.

Marlow Town band entertained the crowds on the Saturday around the enclosure where a birthday cake marked a decade at Dorney.

Mike Spencer-Jones, the Honorary Secretary of the Regatta, said he was "delighted at the high standard of racing” and “pleased to see many of the 14 overseas clubs amongst the trophy winners.”

He said : “The committee and all those involved in the Regatta are extremely privileged to have access to the 2012 Olympic Rowing Lake and take tremendous pride in ensuring that both national and international entries experience a rowing event of the highest possible quality and that Marlow Regatta at Dorney Lake remains a prestigious event in the rowing calender.

“This year’s regatta seemed to attain the balance of a high calibre rowing event, whilst retaining an element of the tradition and heritage of the Regatta.

“A regatta wouldn’t be a regatta without the athletes who once again ensured that the action on the lake was highly exciting and indicate that this event will continue to grow.”

Spokesman Hannah Ferriter said: “The Regatta Committee were particularly touched by the Tideway Scullers victory in the Elite Coxed Fours.

“The Tideway crew were racing in memory of their former President Andy Ripley and sported black ribbons on their rowing lycras.”

Tideway will be racing and raising funds through t-shirt sales in memory of Andy at Henley Royal Regatta next week.

The Regatta committee thanked its many sponsors and volunteers who were “invaluable to the smooth running of the regatta and ensured its tremendous success.”

These included: Marlow ATC, the Sea Cadets, the Scouts, Great Marlow School, RGS Parents, Marlow Rowing Club Juniors.
