ROCK music, a television star, food and fun were all on the menu for a nutrition conscious school at its summer fete.

Former This Morning presenter Fern Britton provided celebrity appeal to Great Missenden Church of England School's summer fundraiser on Saturday.

Fern, once a mainstay of the nation's day time television intake, kicked off the event at the school fields in Church Street, Great Missenden.

She said: “It’s wonderful, all these local schools are so brilliantly supportive and it’s the parents of the kids at school who make it.

“They’re building wonderful lives for our young children and I’m really happy to support them.”

“It is a superbly organised, traditional English school fete raising money and most importantly people really enjoy it,” she added.

The ex-Ready Steady Cook host regularly supports charities and causes in Buckinghamshire, frequently opening events.

She fitted in the appearance before heading off for her niece 21st birthday.

She said: “I try to do as much as I can. I can’t do everything, but I try.”

The school celebrated recieving an award for its nutritional awareness later in the afternoon.

It picked up a the Food for Life Partnership silver award for serving up fresh, local, organic and seasonal school meals.

School nutritionist Victoria Greaves said: “We are really trying to set the standard for local school meals.

"The work we have done really has made a huge difference to the school and all the families.”

She said good food helped pupils' concentration and behaviour.

About 60 per cent of children eat fresh meals at the school each day – much higher than the national average, she added.

Headteacher Roz Thomson said the visit of Jeanette Orrey – a pal of celebrity cook Jamie Oliver – kick started the fresh approach to food.

She said the fete, which had a theme of food around Britain, had been a success.

“It's a great day and the great thing is all the children are involved – it used to be far worse attended.

"But now with the pupils performing it raises the interest.”

Schoolchildren displayed their musical and singing talents, taking centre stage at the fete.
