PLANS for a multi-million pound refurbishment of a Chesham school have today been scrapped after the Government axed a major building project.

Chesham Park Community College was one of more than 1,400 schools nationwide to be promised a slice of £55billion set aside for the Building Schools for the Future scheme by the previous Labour Government.

But today the new coalition said 715 planned projects were to be scrapped in a bid to save money.

These included a £13million refurbishment of Chesham Park, in Chartridge Lane, and work at five other schools in the north of the county.

Today Education Secretary Michael Gove said: "The Building Schools for the Future scheme has been responsible for about one third of all this department's capital spending.

"But throughout its life it has been characterised by massive overspends, tragic delays, botched construction projects and needless bureaucracy."

Earlier this year members of Buckinghamshire County Council agreed a motion they would “lobby urgently” to ensure the agreement to provide the cash for the county's schools was “honoured” (see previous story, below).
