A ONE-WAY system could be introduced as part of plans to redevelop Amersham town centre.

The proposals have been put together by the Amersham Action Group and are to go on public display for the first time at the town's carnival on Saturday.

Making Sycamore Road and Hill Avenue one-way have been proposed by the group, which has been working with the town council and a team of planning consultants.

Action Group chairman Brian Woods said: “At the moment the two-way system means the town gets pretty cluttered. It doesn't give an air of relaxation. It will reduce the speed of traffic and enable some lay-by parking.”

The plans include a better link-up of the area around Sycamore Road, Woodside Road, Woodside Close and Hill Avenue and regenerate the town's main shopping area.

Making a planned Sainsbury's supermarket a 'community focused' building is another idea to have been suggested.

The scheme has been put together following a public consultation ten years ago, followed up by a further survey of residents known as a 'market town health check' two years ago.

Mr Woods added the proposed scheme is still “very much a first draft”.

Residents will be able to see the plans for themselves at a stand at the Amersham carnival, which takes place at King George V field on Saturday. It starts at 12 noon.
