A CROSSING island could be installed near to a busy crossroads in Hazlemere, councillors revealed at a parish council meeting.

The mooted proposal would see an island built in the middle of the Penn Road by the Hazlemere Royal British Legion club at a cost of about £7,000, subject to funding and planning approval.

Cllr Alex Slater told Tuesday's monthly Hazlemere Parish Council meeting that he had held talks with Buckinghamshire County Council about building a new zebra crossing at the crossroads, but this was not deemed to be viable.

BCC Cllr David Carroll said finding suitable pedestrian crossing sites in the village had been a problem for 'some years' but believes this scheme would make a big improvement to the area.

He said: “People who use the RBL, which are predominately elderly people, children and young families struggle to cross the road at the Hazlemere Crossroads.

“So we are trying to make it easier and safer for people to cross the roads around that area, which I also hope will help revitalise businesses and shops based there.”

Cllr Carroll added that a feasibility study would be carried out in due course before funding and planning approval was sought.
