Re: The World Cup

A BILLION fans around the world will tune into the TV, radio, and newspaper coverage of this tournament, while former England icon David Beckham’s renown is as great as Her Majesty The Queen.

Suddenly a talking point becomes an over-riding monomania for a rainbow collection of fans who, united in passion, can debate the merits of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Ghana and Spain – it has become a Latin game as the game’s inventor made another exit, humbled by Germany’s revenge for the 1966 cup win by Alf Ramsay’s England.

No matter: fans delight in supporting their own and in spirited conversation with others they meet. It may not be viewed as a bigger event than the Olympics or a tool as transcendent as the internet, but there is still nothing that compares to this single sport’s most excellent festival.
