HUNDREDS of runners will be taking to the streets tomorrow to take part in this year’s annual Wycombe Half-Marathon.

The race, which is organised by the Handy Cross Runners club and sponsored by Grant and Stone builders' merchants, gets underway at 9.30am at the Rye park in High Wycombe. It then goes along Daws Hill Lane to Flackwell Heath and then on to Bourne End and Wooburn Green before runners end up back at the Rye.

Road closures will be in place on roads along the route throughout the morning.

Nearly 1,000 runners took part last year, with New Zealander Nicholas Browne first over the line and Wycombe mum Samantha Amend winning the women’s race.

Once the half marathon runners are on their way a 10km race will also start on The Rye.

Among those preparing themselves for the gruelling half marathon are Bucks Free Press reporters Rebecca Cain and Andy Carswell, who are both running in memory of relatives.

Rebecca is raising money for the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign charity in memory of her cousin Richard, who passed away in September 2008 at the age of 29, and Andy is fundraising for the RNLI – a charity his aunt Shirley used to raise money for before she died from cancer last June.

Rebecca said: “I'm looking forward to it. We've been training for a long time and it's been good to train with a colleague because we've been encouraging each other.

Andy added: “Neither of us has ever done anything like this before and we only started training in February – before then I couldn't walk to the shop at the end of my road without getting out of breath.
