MORE than 440 signatures were collected in five days calling for road safety measures in West Wycombe following a number of accidents in the village.

The signatures were handed to Buckinghamshire County Council last week by Cllr Frank Downes who said: “The village is designed for coach and horses rather than high speed vehicles.”

Paul Hayday, from Paul's Traditional Sweet Shop, created the survey after pedestrian Judy de Gelas died. Police say a car collided with her and her two grandchildren, a nine-year-old boy and five-year-old girl, in the High Street on June 2. The children are now home.

Mr Hayday said there has been numerous accidents in the nine years he has been in the village and just last year a car smashed into the window of the first house in the village. (Pictured)

Mrs De Gelas' son, Tim, said in a letter to the Bucks Free Press recently: "The death of my mother and injuries to my children has again thrown attention on the issue of road safety here.

"Regardless of the facts in this case, traffic calming is needed on that stretch of road.

"West Wycombe Parish Council and local residents have been trying to achieve something for years and in these past years there have been numerous more accidents."

The survey was left in pubs and shops in the village and asked if residents would like to see a roundabout put in on the approach to the village from the west- 100 per cent said they would.

Mr Hayday said 95 per cent of residents would like to see the speed limit changed from 30mph to 20mph.

Mr Hayday said: “I am here at 6am in the morning. Cars go through here at 60 and 70mph.

“My part is done. The survey is just to raise awareness of what needs to be done.”
