OFFICERS were out in force on Saturday carrying out stop checks on passing motorists - exactly one week after the body of a woman was found burning in Wooburn Common woods.

A total of 32 officers were deployed to roads near the woods in Hedsor Lane to speak with drivers and hand out questionnaires and take personal details.

The checks began as early as 4.30am and continued until 1pm - around the time the woman was discovered by a dog walker.

The woman, aged between 20 and 30, had died from repeated blows to the head, and was also set alight in the woods.

Police say they have had numerous calls on the case and are sifting through these.

They are also carrying out missing person checks to see if there is anyone unaccounted for who matches her description.

Meanwhile, the crime scene continued to be combed by a forensic team on Saturday to try and find further clues.

Detective Sergeant Rob Storrar, who was in charge at Hedsor Lane, said: "We have been encouraged by the number of people coming through.

"It is proving to be a worthwhile exercise - it is only 8.20am and we have had 50 members of the public stopped and spoken to.

"We have identified hopefully potential witnesses through the questionnaire and anything that is likely to be of use will be followed up by further investigation."

There were two check points, one at the junction of Hedsor Lane and Sheepcote Lane, and one at the junction of Sheepcote Lane and Heathfield Road.

A total of 17 detectives, eight traffic officers, and seven uniformed officers patrolled the check points.

Questions asked of motorists included whether they had seen smoke coming from the scene or any cars parked nearby between 5pm on Friday, July 28 and 1pm on Saturday, July 29.

They also gave out leaflets featuring an artist's impression of the woman's face along with a photo of the ring found on her middle finger and the pegasus tattoo on her upper right arm.

By 8.45am on Saturday, 56 vehicles had been checked at the Heathfield Road check point.

Det Sgt Storrar added: "We have to continue to remind the public of what has happened.

"Somebody will know who this female is and it is important to establish that as quickly as possible."
