BUCKINGHAMSHIRE has been placed on red alert by the Met Office, who have warned residents to 'take action' against heavy snowfall.

Several inches of snow has fallen in the county today and the Met Office's most severe weather warning has been put in place.

Traffic was gridlocked along London Road and Amersham Hill in High Wycombe is closed to vehicles travelling uphill.

The M40 is also at a standstill and there are long queues on the A404 between Handy Cross and Maidenhead after lorries jackknifed on both stretches of road.

Some shops in High Wycombe were closed on the last shopping weekend before Christmas as staff were unable to get into work.

The snow is expected to ease off this evening, leaving very icy conditions behind.
