INTERNATIONAL sports stars of the future will be given a cash boost to aid their efforts to make the big time.

Budding sportsmen of all kinds are being encouraged to grab their chance for a £1,500 bursary.

The Sir Steven Redgrave Sports Bursary, run by Wycombe District Council, is again offering youngsters a financial lifeline.

Any youngsters below the age of 21, competing at international level in their sport, have until April 30 to meet the deadline.

WDC Sports Development Team Leader James Cavalier said: “It's really trying to help those who haven't got the financial support.

"We hope to give them that leg up to reach the nett stage and fufill their potential.”

The equipment needed to compete in some sports can put some young sportsmen's ambitions out of reach.

Mr Cavalier said: “This kind of bursary can really remove this kind of disadvantage.

"It puts them on a level playing field to allow their talent to shine through.

“We try to give residents in Wycombe as much of a boost and chance as possible.”

However, the award will not be based specifically on the financial backgrounds of applicants.

Last year 20-year-old Real Tennis champion Karen Hird won the top prize of £1,500.

She has won various international doubles tournaments in the sport – known best for being played by Henry VIII - including the becoming the youngest ever Doubles World Champion in America in May.

Previously unsuccessful applicants are allowed to reapply this year.

An interview will take place on May 10 for bursary hopefuls, with the award evening taking place on May 23.
