A FURIOUS resident has called for fishing to be banned at a pond in Penn which she said harms wildlife and has led to ducks being killed from fishing wire left at the site.

Trish Crouch, 67, from School Road, Penn said she is fed up of finding fishing line around the water and open tin cans.

She said: “I have buried quite a few ducks in my garden over the years after their legs have been entangled in fishing wire and they cannot swim.

"I rescued one last week- it was nearly drowning.

“I have spoken to Penn Parish Council and Chepping Wycombe Parish Council to try to ban fishing.”

Mrs Crouch said a dog was harmed by a fishing hook after it ate a piece of bread off the floor, which had a hook through it, and it resulted in an expensive operation.

She said: “I go over there every morning and see if I can find any fishing line that has been left.

“People don't care. I am not saying everyone doesn't care- people put it in the bin, but there are a lot who don't.”

She said she was disappointed by the parish council's responses.

Clerk of Penn Parish Council, Miles Green, said: “It has been a problem that comes and goes as long as any one can remember.

“People want to fish there, especially youngsters, and we don't want to stop them.

“On the other hand there are an enormous number of ducks. It's a question of balance and educating the youngsters.”

Chairman of Chepping Wycombe Parish Council, Jeff Hershel, said: “There are those who would like to see it stopped for a number of reasons and others who think it would be a pity to stop what has been a past time for many for as many years as the pond has been there.”

He said it is a difficult situation and it is hard to please everybody all the time.
