It has been a busy summer of local visits and events, writes the Labour MP for Wycombe Emma Reynolds.
I was delighted to attend Wycombe Pride again this year. It is a great celebration of diversity and inclusion. I am so proud that the people of Wycombe stand against hatred and division which was also demonstrated by those who showed solidarity in early August against the demonstrations planned by the far right in High Wycombe.
It was a real highlight to take a tour of Rebellion Brewery in Marlow Bottom and see behind the scenes. I met with local farmers at the Bucks County Show to discuss their many opportunities and challenges. It was heartening to hear that Thames Valley Police are leading the way in tackling rural crime. I discussed this vital issue with Rural Crime Taskforce lead, Inspector Stuart Hutchings.
I have joined several important local campaigns. I am supporting the local community group who are fighting to save Derehams Inn pub in Loudwater. I also met again with the team of volunteers leading the work to restore St Lawrence’s church on the top of West Wycombe hill. I met with Wycombe Refugee Partnership and discussed their work to support refugees and asylum seekers.
I was delighted to attend celebrations for Pakistan Independence Day. I had the privilege of working in Pakistan and look back on my time there with fond memories. I also attended a meeting with representatives of the local mosques at which we discussed important domestic and international issues, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. I have been calling for a ceasefire and I was pleased to see the government withdraw 30 arms exports licences to Israel given the real risk these exports are being used to break international humanitarian law. Too many innocent lives, including so many women and children, have been lost and the level of destruction is horrific.
Many of you have echoed my concerns about how Buckinghamshire Council is spending the Future High Streets Fund. I have discussed with several business owners in High Wycombe their concerns about the high street in particular the worrying rise of retail crime.
