BEACONSFIELD are reaping the rewards from Wasps’ move away with 18-year-old fly half Robbie Waldrom scoring and converting his own try on debut in their 17-13 win over Drifters.

Waldrom has been part of the Wasps Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme, but he made his first start for Beaconsfield on Saturday and his try proved telling in their narrow four-point victory.

The result ended a three-game losing streak for Beaconsfield, who have a week off now before returning to action with a derby double.

They play High Wycombe a week on Saturday before taking on Marlow seven days later.

Head coach Simon Tattersall said: “We needed a win after a tough few weeks. We got beat heavily at Thatcham and I was quite critical of some of the players after that.

“We improved against Bicester but on Saturday you have to give the players credit for the way they stood up to a Drifters side that has been playing very well.

“It was important for us. There has been a big transition here and we asked the guys to show what they’re about as players and they did that.”

Andrew Brody scored first for Beaconsfield before Waldrom added their second try.

A late Drifters try made the final score closer than it might have been.

Tattersall said: “We’ve got two big sessions left until the High Wycombe game and I’m sure the players won’t need motivating for that one.

“Then we’ve got Marlow so it’s a big fortnight for us.

“But it’s a bigger fortnight in the players’ minds than the coaches’ minds. As a player these are the games you look forward to, but for the coaches Wycombe is just another team we want to beat.”
