After playing over 130 matches for Wycombe Wanderers you’d expect nothing would be new to Matt Ingram, but captaining the side on Monday represented a first for him.

The goalkeeper led the Blues in their 2-0 win over Crawley Town in the absence of skipper Paul Hayes.

At 22-years-old Ingram is ahead of most in terms of experience at his age and was in buoyant mood after captaining the Chairboys for the first time in his career.

“It was a massive honour to be told I would be leading the side out. I have played 130 odd times here and it is something that I will always treasure,” he explained.

“I didn’t approach it differently at all. Obviously the armband means a lot, but when you are out there it is no different and any of the lads could lead the team out.”

Wanderers’ boss Gareth Ainsworth praised the attitude of his keeper, and highlighted the qualities he felt made him a good candidate to cover for Hayes.

Ainsworth explained: “I picked Matt Ingram because of the level headed character that he is, he is Wycombe through and through and has been with me a long time.

“It is a fantastic day for Matt to be captain of his hometown and to be able to cap it with a win was great.”

The youngster was largely untroubled throughout the match as Crawley struggled to break down a solid Wycombe back four.

Indeed Ingram didn’t have to deal with a single attempt on target and paid homage to his defence after the game.

He said: “I don’t think they had a shot on target, just like at Luton, and the lads in front of me have been brilliant again.

“The two centre-backs were blocking everything and we are being clinical up front as well at the moment so it is a winning formula.”
