Chesham Grammar School (CGS) are celebrating after their under-14 basketball team defeated Dr Challoner’s Grammar School to win the Bucks County Cup.

Having already beaten Challober’s in the group stage of the tournament CGS would have been confident heading into the match and ultimately proved too strong for their opponents.

They have gone unbeaten all season and eased to a comfortable 33-12 victory to record a win which qualifies them for the National Schools tournament later this year.

Captain Nick Nicolaou was in dominant form for CGS and led the way as he picked up 20 points, converted multiple rebounds and also made a number of important blocks.

His side were rarely troubled by Challoner’s and led from the end of the first quarter until the close as the likes of Leo Franks and Folo Omosota produced impressive displays.

CGS head coach, Neil Spittle, said: “I have been really pleased with how hard this team has worked to get to this stage of the national tournament.

“There is still room for improvement too, with many of the team massively benefitting from the tough games we’ve had so far.

“Nick Nicolaou has shown excellent leadership skills too in ensuring the team are focussed and committed to training.”

The victory sets up a meeting with Hertfordshire champions St Columba’s College on Friday, 5 February.

CGS Headteacher, Annmarie McNaney, said of the win: “It was a great match to watch and the boys involved should be proud of their achievements.

“I am enormously proud of what they have achieved on behalf of Chesham Grammar School and the way they represent their school.”
