High Wycombe Rugby first XV ended a run of four straight defeats with a comfortable 29-8 victory over Wallingford.
Joe Openshaw gave Wycombe an early lead with a penalty before Henry Wyse touched down to score and Openshaw made the kick 10-0.
Charlie Edwards extended the home side’s lead with a try before
Wallingford pulled points back with a try of their own to make it 15-5.
Right on half-time, Wycombe were penalised and Wallingford scored a penalty to make it 15-8 at the break.
However, Edwards proved to be Wallingford’s nemesis again, outpacing the Wallingford to score a converted try which made it 22-8.
Wycombe were awarded another penalty when a maul was illegally brought down.
A scrum was called for and with it wheeling number eight Eddie Roche picked up from the base but was well stopped. The ball was fed out to Stephen Phillpot who was initially held up in the tackle but with the power of the forwards behind him he was pushed over the line and was able to ground the ball for Wycombe’s fourth try with Openshaw making the kick to make it 29-8.
Overall a well-deserved victory and Wycombe’s best performance of the season. On Saturday, the team face a trip to Reading Abbey and hoping this win kick-starts their season.
