A GP from Hazlemere dazzled the crowds in Glasgow as she won the gold medal in the age 45-49 Female AG Sprint at the European Championships.

Poulton, who swims for Wycombe District Swimming Club, was up against 116 other competitors in Scotland and despite a chest infection, battled her way to a fantastic victory.

Speaking to the Bucks Free Press about her victory at Strathclyde Country Park, she said: "The swim was a loop in the rowing lake in a wetsuit. We had the most competitors in our wave which made it a vicious swim and I was glad to pull away early on to avoid the washing machine effect behind me.

"I was out of the water first. The bike was very technical and hilly and I extended my lead. The run was a loop around the rowing lake, again hilly and twisty. I kept pushing the pace knowing I had some powerful runners behind me. So I was really chuffed when I managed to hold onto my lead and cross the finish line first with a 45 seconds lead."

Last month, Poulton also won bronze at the European Standard Distance Championship in Estonia.

Having led after the swim and the cycle, Poulton was beaten out of the first two to collect a worthy bronze.

She added: "Considering the very hot conditions and that it was my first time at this distance I was really pleased."
