Wycombe Wanderers stormed to their first League One win of the season with a highly impressive 2-1 victory against Bradford City at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

Goals from Craig Mackail-Smith and Bryn Morris deservedly secured all three points in West Yorkshire after a sparkling display of football throughout against the Bantams.

Mackail-Smith opened the scoring on 27 minutes when he headed home from three yards out after a wicked corner from Joe Jacobson.

Morris, on loan from Shrewsbury, scored his first goal for the Chairboys on 51 minutes when his deflected volley wrongfooted Richard O’Donnell after a delightful cross from Dominic Gape.

Wanderers started brightly and had the first half-chance in the game on two minutes when Mackail-Smith tricked his way into the box but his snap-shot went well wide.

Bradford hit back immediately and almost went ahead 60 seconds later when Sean Scannell’s dangerous cross found Sherwin Seedorf who saw his effort loop just over.

Wycombe, however, definitely had the upper hand in the opening exchanges with some excellent passing through the midfield which was causing the Bantams real problems.

The Blues came close themselves to taking the lead on 10 minutes when Mackail-Smith’s delivery found Morris, who saw his superb volley from 20 yards fly inches over.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side continued to play at a high tempo and on 13 minutes, Randell Williams got clear down the left and his wicked, low cross just eluded Michael Harriman.

The Chairboys were carrying on from where they left off against Plymouth with some lovely, incisive football that Bradford were struggling to deal with.

And, on 27 minutes, they deservedly took the lead when Mackail-Smith nabbed his first of the season.

The Bantams had their first shot on target on 36 minutes when Eoin Doyle turned sharply and hit a firm effort from the edge of the area which Ryan Allsop held easily.

Wycombe continued to play some delightful stuff and Williams had an opportunity on 38 minutes to double the Blues’ lead but his tame effort was collected by O’Donnell.

The Blues came out of the traps quickly after the break, winning an early corner with Anthony Stewart seeing a scuffed volley go straight into O’Donnell’s arms.

Wanderers had a wonderful chance to extend their advantage on 48 minutes when the excellent Mackail-Smith released McCarthy into the box but he saw his strike from 12 yards beaten away by O’Donnell.

The Blues continued to lay siege to the Bradford defence and finally got that second goal on 51 minutes thanks to the brilliant Morris.

Bradford were rocked by that and tried to work their way back into the contest and Doyle had a header on 57 minutes held by Allsop.

The Bantams nearly pulled one back on 65 minutes when substitute Jordan Gibson’s vicious cross-shot neatly caught Allsop out but he managed to claw it out.

Morris nearly added a third moments later when his humdinger from 25 yards was brilliantly tipped wide by O’Donnell.

Allsop produced a magnificent save to keep Bradford at bay on 75 minutes when Jack Payne’s teasing cross found George Miller, who’s goalbound header was denied by the Wycombe keeper.

Morris was running riot in the midfield and saw another long-range effort parried nervously by O’Donnell on 77 minutes.

However, Bradford were handed a lifeline right on 90 minutes when substitute Luca Conville swept home as the Blues failed to clear their lines.

Wanderers, however, saw the game out expertly and held on for a superb victory ahead of an exciting September.
