Wycombe Wanderers got through to third round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2006 with a hard-fought 4-3 win on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time against Forest Green Rovers at Adams Park.

Ryan Allsop was the hero as he saved Paul Digby's penalty to ensure a passage into round three.

In normal time, Carl Winchester equalised with five minutes to go when he tapped home from two yards after Joseph Mills' free kick eluded everyone.

Anthony Stewart thought he had scored the winner on 73 minutes, crashing home the rebound after Sam Saunders had hit the post.

Eariier on Scott Kashket gave the Blues the lead on 55 minutes when he expertly finished after a quality ball through from Adebayo Akinfenwa.

However, a minute later, Rovers' Dayle Grubb equalised when he coolly slotted past Ryan Allsop from the edge of the area.

It was a fairly quiet start to the game at Adams Park and Forest Green had the first shot on six minutes when Theo Archibald saw his deflected strike loop just over.

The visitors looked dangerous going forward and Reuben Reid released Grubb on 12 minutes but Allsop thwarted the attack just in time.

Rovers were getting on top and after a slick move, Carl Winchester shot just wide from 12 yards on 18 minutes.

Wycombe were probing away at the other end and Akinfenwa caused havoc in the Rovers area but the referee blew up for an infringement.

Akinfenwa had a sniff of a chance on 22 minutes when he met Joe Jacobson’s corner with a firm header but it went well off target.

‘The Beast’ had an even better opportunity five minutes later when another superb Jacobson cross found him in the box but he headed a fraction wide.

The Blues were working more chances now and Nick Freeman had his volley on 28 minutes well held by Montgomery.

Forest Green were continuing to look good in attack and 60 seconds later, Archibald’s 20-yard curler was easily held by Allsop.

Mark Cooper’s men had the next chance on 37 minutes when Allsop dealt comfortably with Grubb’s effort.

Kashket had the final opportunity before the break when he weaved past a couple of Rovers defenders before letting fly with a shot which went high and wide.

Wanderers were trying to find their best form and began the second half well as Saunders had an effort on 49 minutes well held by Montgomery after good hold-up play by Akinfenwa.

And the Chairboys took the lead on 55 minutes when Akinfenwa played a beautiful pass through to Kashket who did the rest.

However, a minute later, Rovers equalised when a ball through found Grubb, who slotted home.

The game livened up after those goals and Forest Green had a great chance to take the lead but Gavin Gunning headed straight at Allsop from six yards on 64 minutes.

However, Wanderers regained the lead on 73 minutes when Saunders smashed the post from 12 yards and Stewart slammed home.

Just when it looked like Wanderers were going to get through, Green grabbed another equaliser courtesy of Winchester.

Paris Cowan-Hall nearly snatched a late winner on 89 minutes as Montgomery scrambled his shot away just as Freeman was coming in.

The Chairboys then prevailed on penalties to get through to the third round for only the second time in their history.
