Wycombe keeper Ryan Allsop was the penalty hero for Wanderers as they got through to the Carabao Cup third round for the first time since 2006.

The Blues saw off Forest Green 4-3 on penalties after it was 2-2 in normal time and Allsop’s save from Paul Digby ensured a passage into the third round for only the second time in their history.
Scott Kashket opened the scoring before Dayle Grubb equalised minutes later.

Anthony Stewart thumped home to mate it 2-1 before Carl Winchester equalised with five minutes to go.

Despite his heroics, Allsop heaped praise on goalkeeper coach Andy Fairman, alluding to the fact that he studiously looks at penalty takers in detail.

He said: “It is something we work on with Andy,

“Andy works very hard behind the scenes. We sat down before the game and had a quick look at their penalty takers and Andy is always there to give me quick reminder.

“Big credit to Andy for the work he has done and it has paid off in this round and the last.”

Even though he made that crucial intervention in the shootout, Allsop explained that he would have rather the team won in normal time.

He added: “I would have preferred it if we had done it in the 90 minutes but shootouts present a great opportunity for the goalkeeper to be the hero.

“Yves [Ma-Kalambay] was the big hero in the last round but unfortunately he picked up an injury. It is nice to be a hero and to get through and hopefully we can get a good draw.W
