Wycombe's Scott Kashket scored the game's only goal as Wanderers beat Northampton Town 1-0 at the PTS Academy Stadium in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Kashket notched his third of the season on 10 minutes, smashing home an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box past a despairing Lewis Ward after good work from Paris Cowan-Hall.

In truth, the Chairboys could have added more and were the dominant team on the night.

Wycombe had a golden chance to open the scoring in the fifth minute when the ball broke through to Fred Onyedinma inside the area but Ward made a superb block to deny him.

However, Wanderers didn’t have to wait much longer for that goal and it came courtesy of that Kashket rocket.

It was a fairly tepid affair with Wycombe looking comfortable at both ends of the pitch with Northampton unable to create anything of note.

The Blues had a half-chance to extend their advantage on 22 minutes when Nick Freeman burst down the right and sent in a low cross which the lively Alex Samuel diverted wide.

The Chairboys looked dangerous with their attacking line-up and Cowan-Hall stung the palms of Ward on 25 minutes.

The Cobblers hadn’t had a shot in anger in the first 40 minutes but nearly had an opportunity when Billy Waters lined up to shoot but Anthony Stewart denied him with an excellent tackle.

Northampton had the first opportunity of the second half when Waters clipped the ball just over on 47 minutes after Wycombe failed to clear their lines.

Wanderers withstood a bit of early second half pressure and almost nabbed a second when Cowan-Hall’s curler deflected inches over on 52 minutes with Ward beaten.

Kashket almost scored a dazzling second a minute later when he beat three men in the box but his daisycutter was drilled wide.

The Cobblers were trying to work their way back into proceedings and Daniel Powell had an effort which went high and wide on 67 minutes.

Waters was arguably Northampton's best player on the night and he unleashed a blistering strike from 30 yards which was close to hitting the target with 15 minutes to go.

Randell Williams came on to inject pace into the Blues and he saw his cross-shot easily collected by Ward on 80 minutes.

Yves Ma-Kalambay was called into his first piece of real action on the night on 84 minutes when Waters' firm cross was kept out at the near post.

Northampton were building up a head of steam and had easily their best chance with four minues to go when Dean Bowditch was denied from six yards by a combination of Ma-Kalambay and Curtis Thompson.

The home side had another effort seconds later when Jordan Turnbull's long range curler was well held by Ma-Kalambay.

A decent start for the Chairboys' Checkatrade campaign and that makes it five games unbeaten in all competitions.
