Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth was pleased with his side's authoritative display as they beat Northampton 1-0 at the PTS Academy Stadium in the first group match of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Scott Kashket scored the only goal of the game on 10 minutes but in truth Wycombe were dominant for most of the match until Northampton created a couple of opening at the death.

Ainsworth made 10 changes from the weekend's draw with Luton and was delighted with his team, notably Kashket and forward partner Alex Samuel who made his first start for the Blues.

He said: "I thought we caused them a lot of problems, especially in the first half.

"Scotty is going to get the headlines for a fantastic goal but Alex Samuel on his full debut was fantastic.

"It whets my appetite to be able to work with someone like that who is willing to put the effort in. He is a mini Mackail-Smith without a doubt.

"Charlie Fox (on loan from QPR) is here to learn and it is good to have and he has got a clean sheet on his debut. And it is great for Fred Onyedinma to get minutes into his legs too.

"Scott is a goalscorer and a fantastic player. He still isn't fully fit and he faded second half but the running he did was awesome to see.

"Battling isn't his thing and we have others to do that. If we can keep him fit and firing, he will be a weapon in League One."

The win at Northampton made it five unbeaten in all competition for the Chairboys and Ainsworth explained that he felt some of the draws could have been turned into wins.

He added: "Blackpool, Luton and Plymouth should have been wins for us and that would be six points extra.

"If you take one of those away, that would be four points and we would be in the top 10.

"Performances have been great with the movement and the passing and we can mix it up with Akinfenwa so we have a lot going for us."
