A STUDENT at John Hampden Grammar School recorded his best ever result on the snow this August, in the Junior Freestyle World Championships, Cardrona, New Zealand, finishing 12th overall.

Seb Ison, 17, following selection, joined the GBR ski cross team for a training camp in Australia prior to the championships. His form there was incredibly promising and he gave his best ever performance finishing in the top ten.

From Australia, the team flew to New Zealand for the main event. In practice, the course and the conditions proved challenging. Qualifications followed and only the 16 fastest times were eligible to progress. Finishing in 15th place secured Ison’s entry into his first World Championship Finals.

Drawn against four higher ranked Ski Cross Racers, Ison got off to a disappointing start, however, his calm composure enabled him to capitalise upon an opponent’s error before cleanly overtaking, gaining ground and finishing third.

He said: “My goal was to get through the qualifiers and into the finals, so to have done this and finished overall 12th in the World Championships is way beyond my expectations.”
