Wycombe Wanderers proved more than a match for League One leaders Portsmouth as they grabbed a thoroughly deserved point after a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth in an absorbing contest at a sodden Fratton Park.

Joe Jacobson grabbed the crucial equalier from the spot on 88 minutes after Fred Onyedinma was clumsily fouled by Christian Burgess.

Substitute Brett Pitman thought he got the winner with five minutes to go when he headed home from close-range after a terrific cross from Jamal Lowe.

Earlier on, Bryn Morris stunned the home crowd on 22 minutes with a fantastic strike from 20 yards into the bottom corner after wonderful hold-up play from Adebayo Akinfenwa.

That shook the home side into action and Gareth Evans equalised on 56 minutes with a thumping header from six yards after a sublime cross from the dangerous Lowe.

There was an electric atmosphere inside a sodden Fratton Park early on but it was quite a quiet start with both sides feeling each other out.

Wycombe were looking comfortable in possession early on, using their high press to good effect.

However, Portsmouth almost got in behind on eight minutes when Lowe’s low cross was nervously cleared by Sido Jombati.

A minute later, Burgess’ header from Ronan Curtis’ corner was parried clear by Ryan Allsop.

Akinfenwa was looking to get off the mark for the season and he met Jacobson’s free kick was a firm header which was well held by Craig MacGillivray on 12 minutes.

Wanderers almost opened the scoring on 16 minutes when Akinfenwa caused havoc in the box with MacGillivray struggling and Onyedinma saw his effort cleared off the line.

The Blues then silenced the home side with a truly magnificent goal through Morris.

Morris picked the ball up and did an expert one-two with the superb Akinfenwa before the on-loan man shifted it onto his right foot and smashed it past the helpless MacGillivray.

Wycombe were looking full value for their lead, looking solid and barely giving Kenny Jackett’s side a sniff.

Lowe got in the area on 35 minutes but thumped his shot into the side netting after being closed down well by Darius Charles.

The home side were starting to work a few openings and Burgess had a header easily held by Allsop on 41 minutes.

Allsop then produced an incredible save to deny Tom Naylor from four yards after excellent work by the lively Lowe.

Wycombe started the second half well and Matt Bloomfield had a chance on 50 minutes from Jombati’s knockdown but his volley was deflected over.

Portsmouth were continuing to push and probe but Gareth Ainsworth’s men were continuing to hold firm.

Jackett’s men were in the ascendency and got their equaliser on 56 minutes hrough their skipper Evans.

The home side were buoyed by that goal and Wanderers were beginning to hang on a little bit with the Pompey crowd making their voices heard.

On 65 minutes, Akinffenwa had a golden opportunity to give the Blues the lead when he met Morris’ wonderful cross with a bullet header which went inches wide with MacGillivray beaten.

Seconds later, Portsmouth had a brilliant opportunity to themselves go ahead when a long ball found Lowe one-on-one but Allsop denied him with a superb block.

Wanderers had a huge shout for a penalty on 74 minutes when the tireless Bloomfield worked his way into the area and looked to have been tripped by Nathan Thompson but referee Craig Hicks waved away the appeals.

The Chairboys were beginning to grow into the game again and the excellent Morris saw a fierce free kick go just wide on 77 minutes.

The indsutrious Thompson came so close for the home side with nine minutes to go, curling just wide from the edge of the box.

However, just when Wycombe were frustrating their opponents, Pitman headed home to send the home side into raptures.

Fortunately, Jacobson had the last laugh to get a draw after such a spitited performance.
