Princes Risborough racer Geri Nicosia finished third in the 2018 Ginetta GT5 Championship.

It started badly for Nicosia on Saturday morning in qualifying. Having used his allocation of tyres on the test days, he was clearly at a disadvantage with wet tyres on a dry track. Even so, finishing in 14th was a shock to most. By afternoon, the rain had come and a wet race would be the order of the day, with Nicosia starting seven rows back in 14th

A blistering start saw Nicosia initially gain five places by the second corner before running wide at Old Hairpin which cost 2 of those places over the lap. He managed to get back into a rhythm and move back up the order to eighth place – low enough for James Kellett to be crowned champion, but second place might still be possible.

Sunday race two saw a dry track. Nicosia started eighth managed another of his now trademark flying starts and moved up to 3rd place as he exited Redgate.

The race turned into a two lap sprint, but Nicosia was unable to hold off Alex Toth-Jones on the uphill run to McLeans and had to settle for fourth place – but this result guaranteed he would finish at least third overall
The final race was held late afternoon, and with a partial reverse grid, Nicosia would start from seventh place.

Nicosia excelled himself this time, from seventh to second coming out of Redgate and into the lead before McLeans, it looked like he would be good for the required result. But disaster struck further back at the chicane where a spinner was hit hard leaving two broken cars on the track, a third was unable to avoid further contact. While the safety car was brought out initially, it became apparent that the track was completely blocked and the race was stopped, to be restarted from original grid positions

After a long break, the race would be restarted but as a shortened 10 minute race.

Nicosia again moved up from the start but this time only made it as far as third and was unable to pass the second place car, before finishing fifth.

Nicosia said: “We needed to finish second or higher in race three to secure second overall for the season. Sadly it wasn’t meant to be.”
