Adebayo Akinfenwa scored his 200th career goal as Wycombe Wanderers won their first league home game of the season, beating Burton Albion 2-1 at a dreary Adams Park.

Akinfenwa made it 2-0 on 36 minutes with a trademark bullet header thanks to a brilliant run and cross by Randell Williams.

Joe Jacobson gave the Blues the lead on 29 minutes when he slotted a penalty past Dimitar Evtimov after Craig Mackail-Smith was bundled over by Kyle McFadzean.

Wycombe were under the cosh in the first 15 minutes but the Blues defence was just about holding firm after a bright start by the visitors.

Although Burton looked incisive with their play, Wanderers had the first real shot in anger on 21 minutes when Dominic Gape shot wildly wide and over after being teed up by Matt Bloomfield.

The Blues were growing into the game and Darius Charles had a great opportunity to give Wycombe the lead on 22 minutes when he met Jacobson’s great delivery with a firm header but it went just over.

Mackail-Smith then missed a sitter on 27 minutes, putting a header wide from all of two yards after Adebayo Akinfenwa flicked on Randell Williams’ long throw.

Then the home side got the goal from the penalty spot on 29 minutes through Jacobson after a rush of blood from McFadzean.

And the Blues made it two on 36 minutes as Akinfenwa notched his 200th career goal with a bullet header after sublime wing play and a cross from Williams.

Those twin strikes knocked the stuffing out of the Brewers and the Chairboys were firmly in control approaching half-time.

Charles had half a chance to make it three on the stroke of the break but headed wide from a wicked Jacobson cross.

Burton came out with renewed vigour in the second half and Boyce headed wide when well placed on 46 minutes from Jake Hesketh’s cross.

And the Brewers got that goal a minute later when Sordell rounded Ryan Allsop to slot home.

The Blues were dealt a blow on 54 minutes when Akinfenwa went off injured.

The visitors strong reply had fizzled out a little bit with Wycombe getting to grips with their changed system.

Burton did have another chance on the hour when Lucas Akins saw his effort blocked in the six-yard box by Williams.

Wanderers were looking to get back in the ascendency and Mackail-Smith was snuffed out on 63 minutes when his effort was held by Dimitar Evtimov after great wing play by Paris Cowan-Hall.

Albion almost nabbed an equaliser on 67 minutes when Damien McCrory’s excellent cross just evaded Devante Cole after superb play by Sordell.

The Blues were still looking for a third and Mackail-Smith’s flicked header on 70 minutes went over after more wonderful wing play by Williams.

Boyce was then denied on 75 minutes by a magnificent save from Allsop, who palmed his bullet header away from danger.

The Brewers kept plugging away and Sordell's snap-shot fizzed well over on 87 minutes from 10 yards out.

Charles was proving a real lynchpin at the back for Wanderers and he snuffed out the threat of Cole on 89 minutes as he charged through on goal.

Cole had one more effort for the visitors.but he spooned over from 12 yards in injury time.

The final whistle bought sheer relief for the Blues and they move to 17th in League One.
