Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has praised the spirit of his side after Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Scunthorpe United at Adams Park.

A nightmare start saw Wanderers 2-0 down inside the opening ten minutes, but goals from Dominic Gape, Fred Onyedinma and a stoppage-time winner from from Craig Mackail-Smith completed a memorable turnaround.

Speaking after the game, Ainsworth put the result down to the togetherness within his squad.

He said: ‘’If anybody in the last five years asked what Wycombe Wanderers were all about you would say belief, character, and being hard to play against, and these are all things that I’m really proud of.

‘’To me it’s no surprise that we managed to come back, but I’m just so pleased that this will give us some belief that we can compete with the best in this league.’’

Adopting a new 4-4-2 formation, the Chairboys initially struggled to get to grips with their opponents who capitalised on some lacklustre defending to take the initiative. Dominic Gape then rifled home before half-time to put the game in the balance.

‘’Getting the goal before half-time was massive because it gave us that belief,’’ said Ainsworth.

‘’It was a really big moment in terms of showing the boys that what they were doing was going to work and that we could go on to win the game which obviously we did.

‘’Football can chuck up some amazing scenarios and the emotions you feel you can’t buy, and that’s why today is so special. Today belongs to the boys and they did exactly what I wanted of them bar the first ten minutes.’’

Ainsworth will be hoping that his side can carry this momentum into Tuesday night when his side welcome Rochdale to Adams Park, in a game which could potentially see Wanderers leapfrog their opponents in the league table.
