Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth hailed a "special day" for his side as they drew 1-1 against League One favourites Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Fred Onyedinma had given the Blues a deserved lead on 67 minutes, rifling home from 15 yards to send the Chairboys fans into raptures.

However, Josh Maja grabbed an equaliser for the home side with five minutes to go but Wanderers put in a display which drew praise from observes at the match.

Ainsworth said: "It was a really good day and one of those special days that the fans will remember.

"I thought we were the better team in the first half but they came back strongly in the second half, as you would expect them to.

"To come away with a point from the Stadium of Light is really special for Wycombe."

Over 1,000 Wanderers supporters travelled north for the game and Ainsworth reserved special praise for the impact they had during the match.

He added: "I had hairs standing up on the back of my neck when I went over to them at the end there.

"It was a special moment as a manager and I wanted to show we could perform on the big stage.

"It was a great finish from Fred and our fans never stopped singing. Matt Ingram made a fantastic save at the end and I am over the moon to get a point.

"The players have to do it on the pitch. They were brilliant."

Ingram made his second 'debut' and performed flawlessly between the sticks for the Blues.

The on-loan QPR man signed for seven days, meaning he was only available for this game and Ainsworth is keeping his fingers crossed that he can strike up another deal for the next couple of fixtures.

He added: "I want him to be back in a Wycombe shirt again. I think he wants to keep playing. I would love him to stay but I am sure we will have to work hard to get someone in as Ryan [Allsop] and Yves [Ma-Kalambay] will be out for a few weeks."
