Wycombe Wanderers suffered their first defeat in seven games to League One’s bottom club AFC Wimbledon at Adams Park, losing 2-1, giving new Dons boss Wally Downes his first win as manager.

Wanderers went behind to Kwesi Appiah’s close range strike and Jake Jervis added a second in the 90th minute. Fred Onyedinma got one back straight away but the Dons held on for a crucial victory in their attempt to escape the drop.

Wycombe started well dominating early spells of possession but failed to create any clear cut chances with the first 15 minutes going by with no noteworthy incidents to report.

The first real chance of the game came on 20 minutes when good work down the wing from Jason McCarthy whipped in a ball that Randell Williams nodded back across goal but striker Nathan Tyson could only put his header over the bar from six yards out.

Wimbledon opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Wycombe failed to clear a corner where James Hanson flicked across goal for Appiah to slam into the roof of the net from point blank range.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men could fell aggrieved to not be awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half as good work from Onyedinma saw Will Nightingale seeming to clip the Chairboys forward but nothing was given.

Wycombe went into the break a goal down all be it against the run of play.

They came out the traps slightly better for the second half with Onyedinma looking the most likely to cause problems and when Alex Samuel was saw his shot superbly saved by Tom King in the Wimbledon goal.

Wycombe huffed and uffed but to no avail and right on 90 minutes Jervis doubled the vistors lead after substitute Tyler Garrett crossed in a good ball that Jervis thumped home.

Onyedinma pulled one back with seconds to go after a superb low cross from Tyson but Wanderers will be left ruing the chance to make it seven wins on the bounce at home.
