Gareth Ainsworth heaped praise on new signing Paul Smyth as Wycombe produced an excellent performance in their very creditable 2-2 draw with Championship side Brentford on Saturday.

Wanderers raced into a two-goal lead as Trialist FW1 converted from close-range after brilliant work from Smyth and Adebayo Akinfenwa made it 2-0 with a bullet header.

Brentford fought back with goals from Fredrik Hammar and Emiliano Marcondes but overall Ainsworth was very pleased with his side's work, and QPR loanee Smyth in particular.

He said: "Paul is very lively and very quick.

"He picks up a lot of fouls. You only have to look at him against us last year [scored two against Wycombe for Accrington] and he was superb that night.

"He can play a variety of positions and he can finish, cross and he got a great assist here and won numerous fouls for us.

"He is going to be a very exciting signing for us."

Ainsworth reflected on his side's display against the West London side and was extremely satisfied with their afternoon's work.

He added: "They are a strong Championship side.

"They were missing one or two but I was really pleased. We got a good first half under our belt and second half you get a few trialists coming on and playing and it got a bit disjointed but we still had a couple of chances to win the game.

"They didn't get in behind us too much which I was pleased with. We employed the deep press that we normally do when we come up against sides who like possession.

"We saw some good counter attacking football. It was great to see Bayo getting another goal. It is exciting but there is plenty of work to do but overall I am pleased so far."
