Wycombe Wanderers will compete in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup this season for the first time since 2014.e.

The Blues lifted the trophy 28 times between 1902 and 2012, but withdrew from the competition ahead of the 2014/15 campaign as a result of carrying a small squad with no reserve, development or under-18 players at manager Gareth Ainsworth's disposal.

However, with 23 players currently on the club's books, Ainsworth and chairman Trevor Stroud have made the decision to re-enter the club into the county cup, currently held by Slough Town, who defeated Reading in last season's final.

Ainsworth said: "I know the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup means a lot to many of our supporters, who have fond memories of seeing the club compete in the competition throughout its non-league days and into the modern era as well.

"We had to make the difficult decision not to take part in the cup five years ago, to make sure we didn't over-burden ourselves with too many fixtures given the small squad we had at the time.

"This season we've been able to strengthen the squad in terms of quality and numbers, and we want to make sure that everyone stays fit and sharp so that they're ready to be called upon when needed.

"Entering the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup provides the opportunity for us to play more competitive matches throughout the season to give more minutes to more of the boys, and of course we'll be looking to win every game that we play - as we always do - so it would be great if we could end the season with some silverware."

Stroud added: "We feel it's a mark of the club's recent progress that Gareth has now been able to assemble a larger squad of players which enables us to meet one of our long-term ambitions and re-enter the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup.

"We're looking forward to the first round draw to discover our opponents and it'll be a proud moment to see us taking part in the competition once again after a five-year absence."
