Former AFC Wimbledon defender Darius Charles has rejoined Wycombe Wanderers, signing an initial short-term deal until January.

The former AFC Wimbledon defender arrived at Adams Park last summer but he made played just seven times due to an ongoing hip problem, which led to his departure from Adams Park at the end of his contract.

However, the 31-year-old was invited back to join the squad for pre-season training and has successfully built up match fitness, providing boss Gareth Ainsworth with another option in his backline.

Ainsworth said: “It was really hard to see Darius going through his injury problems last season, not just because we knew he’s an important part of the team when he’s involved, but also because I know it affected him personally and could have ended his career prematurely.

“However, he’s shown immense strength of character to come through it, and worked incredibly hard to go through his rehab and get himself fit. He played in a couple of friendlies and came through them unscathed, and I’m delighted that he has this opportunity now to prolong his career and show people what a talented defender he really is.

“Someone with that kind of character is one I want in my changing room, and the boys love having him as part of the squad. Huge credit has to go to my physio Cian O’Doherty and sports scientist Dave Wates for helping Darius through his injury and I’m sure we’ll now get to see the rewards on the pitch.”
