GERRARDS Cross Bowls Club are celebrating after the 10 best days in its history.

Some of the most amazing performances from Cross bowlers has put the club at the heart of English bowling.

The national finals at Leamington saw two national champions emerge.

In winning the National Fours title, Gerrards Cross defeated teams from Huntingdon, Sussex, Derbyshire, Suffolk and Berkshire en route to being crowned champions of England.

This was followed by Neil Farnish being crowned English champion in the Senior Singles after wins against players from Kent, Norfolk and Devon.

In the Top Club competition, the winning continued with the ladies of Gerrards Cross taking on one of the favourites from Wiltshire. This was totally new territory for the Cross but they were not overwhelmed by the opposition.

Julie Skelly got the side off to a wonderful start after winning the singles and, with the triples and fours holding significant leads, the game was conceded well before the end.

The ladies now have reached the Top Club finals for the very first time in their history and for most this will be their first taste of playing at Leamington.

This was followed up by the men who also won their regional Top Club final beating a side from Bristol to also qualify for the finals at Leamington.

David Simpson got the team off to a great start in the Two Woods, followed by John McGuinness winning the Four woods and, when the triples of Tom McGuinness, George Reid and Andrew Briden won their rink, the game was over.

This is the very first time in the history of the club that both men and women have qualified for the national finals in Top Club.

It represents an amazing achievement for Gerrards Cross this season where they have become one of the most successful clubs in the country.

President Kirk Smith was full of praise, saying: “This has been a truly amazing few days for Gerrards Cross. I’m delighted for all the players that have achieved so much but especially the ladies who have really come into their own this season.

“I’m very proud to be president of the Club at this most amazing time.”
