Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth consoled Rochdale’s teenage right-back Luke Matheson after the 17-year-old’s error led to Wycombe’s winner.

Matheson’s foul on substitute Paul Smyth in the 94th minute of the match so Wanderers get a penalty, with stand-in captain Joe Jacobson sealing all three points for Wycombe, as he calmly sent Jay Lynch the wrong way.

Wycombe won the game 2-1.

Moments after the game had finished, Matheson was in floods of tears with Smyth, Adebayo Akinfenwa, Rochdale’s Calvin Andrew all comforting the youngster before Ainsworth had a word.

The Wycombe manager said: “Unfortunately for the youngster, Matheson, he’s given away a penalty.

“But I think he’s going to be a cracking player at the highest level and I also think that the boy he was up against in Paul Smyth is going to go all the way as well.

“Smyth is also a superb talent and he came out on top of that one against Matheson.

“I said to Matheson afterwards: ‘I was lucky enough to play at a high level and I’ll tell you now, you will get there.

'I’ve not seen a talent like you for a long time and you’ll learn from this.

'You’ve got to go through the bad times to enjoy the good times, and you’ll have plenty of good times so don’t let this upset you.'

“He is only 17 and the way he’s playing is phenomenal and it’s a privilege to see him play because he’s a cracking player and a cracking lad.”
