South West One East: Jack Pattinson calls on Windsor Rugby Club to go back to basics after a wake-up call in defeat to Beaconsfield

Pattinson and Windsor were full of confidence following a famous win at Royal Wootton Bassett the previous weekend but have been brought back down to earth as rivals Beaconsfield completed the league double at Home Park.

The hosts managed a try from Sam Woodhall plus a conversion and a penalty kick from the boot of Jack Gaylor but failed in their attempts to complete a hat-trick of wins in the South West One East.

Pattinson has given credit to Beaconsfield for teaching his side another lesson and he admitted both he and his players made mistakes in the derby defeat.

And he has called for Windsor to go back to basics once again – a move that has seen them win in five of their last eight matches compared with five straight losses at the start to the season.

Pattinson told the Observer: “It was a tough day but credit to Beaconsfield because tactically they were much better than us. They played the game a lot better and we struggled to come up with solutions to some of the problems they opposed us with, and when we did get opportunities we were just not clinical.

“It was a good wake up call though. We’ve had a good run in the last four or five games but perhaps complacency crept in a little bit at times. We were very slow to start the game and they scored from kick-off pretty much.

“It was a good wake up call so we will go back to basics and go again. It’s not the end of the world at all. We’ve got a good group together here and it was one of those days. Sometimes you lose but you’ve just got to bounce back.

“It wasn’t good enough from us. Beaconsfield taught us the same lesson and we haven’t learnt from it which is probably why I’m frustrated.

“Their scrum half (Aled Lewis) did an excellent job of managing the game and slowing it down which suited them really well and fair play to them because we just couldn’t come up with the solutions.

“There was a couple of crucial moments where we didn’t execute properly and weren’t clinical enough but fair play to Beaconsfield because they went down our end and scored a try or kicked three points.

“The game just kept on running away from us to be honest. That’s sport and you can’t play well every week. We’ve got to lick our wounds and patch up in our week off and then go again.”

Pattinson continued: “Losing to your rivals definitely hurts but I have to say fair play to Beaconsfield. I know they’ve had challenges with a lot of injuries as well.

“I have to hold my hands up and say they were better than us and in the last game as well. Hopefully we will still be in this league next year and get some revenge, but they’ve taught us a couple of lessons.

“The main positive for us is it’s a wake-up call and it brings us back down to earth that actually we’ve got to go back to what has been working. We went a little bit away from the tactical approach with some boys trying to be heroes at times.

“I made a couple of mistakes myself in terms of some substitutions at the wrong times. I was just trying to influence the game but didn’t quite get it right, so the defeat will just wake us all up and re-focus the mind for the next game.”

The defeat leaves Windsor in 11th position in the South West One East table and seven points above Wimborne in the relegation spots ahead of a trip to bottom side and winless Salisbury on their return to action on Saturday 1st February (2.30pm).
