WYCOMBE Wanderers won their first away game since November after a 2-0 victory at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday - leaving them on their highest points total in League One in 18 years.

The Chairboys returned to winning ways at the weekend with their fourth win on the road, meaning they have secured 56 points this season.

The last time Wycombe were on 56 points in League One was back in 2002, when the club ended th3 season on 64 points to finish 11th in the table.

Victory at The University of Bolton Stadium came after an own goal from Aristote Nsiala before Joe Jacobson secured the three points from the spot, scoring his ninth goal of the season.

Gareth Ainsworth praised his players for turning their fortunes around away from home and for the points total achievement, but he wants to continue to push on.

The Wycombe manager told the Bucks Free Press: “This group has done phenomenally well with where they are this season.

“To add to that, with this takeover very imminent, I’m hoping days now, we’ve got a superb chance to push on with this club.

Bucks Free Press:

“The whole lot of people at this club, the fans, the trust and the squad of players should be so proud of themselves.

“It’s an incredible achievement to have that points total after this amount of games and I’m proud to be at the front of it, but sometimes they make my job easy. The credit is definitely to the players.”

Ainsworth continued: “We’ve had some tough fixtures away from home, so I’m pleased we’ve got back on track at a fabulous stadium as well.

“The away win was brilliant, brilliant timing and so important to back it up with a performance on Saturday.

“The fans up at Bolton were just absolutely awesome. I wish I could thank everyone of them personally and hopefully they understand how important they are.”

David Wheeler, who signed a three-year contract in the summer, was also delighted to get back to winning ways on the road and also praised the fans for making the trip up north.

He said: “It felt like it’s been a while, we’ve been so dominant at home it doesn’t stand out that we haven’t won so many games away from home.

Bucks Free Press:

“I think regardless if it was home or away, we wanted to follow up the previous result with a win. I think we deserved the win. It was a good performance.

“I think if you win every game at home and lose every game away you’re still doing pretty well.

“I don’t think it was a huge stress. It’s something we need and wanted to correct, but because of our home form it wasn’t as big of a stress for us.

“It’s very admirable that the fans made the trip up to Bolton considering the weather forecast.

“We were thinking there was a possibility that it was going to be called off but the weather ended up being fine on the day.

“It’s a long way to come with a high risk of it being called off, so we were very grateful for that.”

Wycombe will look to win back to back games as they host Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
