Wycombe won back-to-back league matches for the first time since November as goals from Anthony Stewart, Adebayo Akinfenwa and a penalty from Joe Jacobson saw the Chairboys easily defeat Tranmere 3-1 at Adams Park.

In a first-half of few chances, Wycombe had the first real attempt of the contest when Fred Onyedinma’s half-chance was blocked by Peter Clarke, with the shot looping into the hands of Scott Davies on 18 minutes.

Wycombe started to get into the game as Onyedinma and Paul Smyth caused problems down the wing but with Manny Monthe and Clarke at the back, the attacking force Wycombe had on offer struggled to break down Tranmere’s defence.

Prior to the match, Tranmere had only won five league games all season and you can see why, as Micky Mellon’s side played so deep that Wycombe enjoyed the vast majority of possession.

This invited the Chairboys to take shots from range as Curtis Thompson fired over from 25-yards just before the half-hour mark, and Jason McCarthy saw his free-kick on 33 minutes easily caught by Davies.

The first-half was so poor from Tranmere’s standards that Kieron Morris’ looping cross which went into the side-netting was the closest Ryan Allsop was tested by the visitors.

And the away-side resorted to timewasting just before the break as their keeper, Davies, took an age to retrieve the ball whenever it went out of play.

But this came back to bite Tranmere as Wycombe took the lead right on the stroke of half-time, when Joe Jacobson’s corner was flicked on by David Wheeler, and there was Anthony Stewart to shoulder it in from two-yards.

It may not have been the best of first-halves from a Wycombe perspective, but the Chairboys certainly deserved the lead.

The second-half started with Wycombe coming out of the traps, as Smyth saw his effort on 48 minutes from 15-yards get saved by Davies, before Akinfenwa headed against the crossbar moments later from six-yards, and from the resulting rebound, the ‘Beast’ headed over.

However, against the run of play, Tranmere equalised through James Vaughan as he got away from Stewart and beautifully placed it past Allsop with pace, into the far-left corner on 63 minutes.

It was Vaughan’s first goal for the club, and Tranmere’s first goal in five matches.

However, Tranmere’s leveller didn’t last long as Wycombe made it 2-1 seven minutes later.

Onyedinma, who was without a doubt one of Wycombe’s best players, whipped in a great ball and there was Akinfenwa to flick it past Davies to give Wycombe their second match of the contest.

Wycombe could have wrapped up the win in the 88th minute when Jacobson’s corner was headed just wide by substitute Alex Samuel.

But the game was wrapped up when Samuel was taken out by Davies in injury-time, and referee Charles Breakspear had no option but to point to the penalty spot.

And up stepped Jacobson who sent Davies the wrong way, and slotted it into the goalkeeper's left-hand side.

The victory means Wycombe remain third, but are now one point off the top spot.

Their next game is away to Doncaster on February 29.
