Gareth Ainsworth has described Wycombe reaching the League One play-off final as ‘awesome’, after the Chairboys edged past Fleetwood Town at Adams Park in their semi-final second leg.

His side drew 2-2 on the night but defeated Joey Barton’s men 6-3 on aggregate over the two legs, with winger Fred Onyedinma scoring a brace in the draw – his first goals since September.

The Chairboys will now face Oxford United in the Wembley show piece on Monday, July 13 in a Bucks/Oxon final.

Speaking after the match, Ainsworth said: “I can't thank the boys enough.

“You know, their efforts have just been phenomenal all week.

“All four weeks since we got back from lockdown and all they've been doing is focusing on being their best.

“And I ask them to be better than they were on Friday.

“It was a tough ask, but they've defended unbelievably against what I'll say is possibly the best away football team we've have down here all season.”

The 47-year-old also praised Fleetwood’s forward thinking, which saw them take the lead against Wycombe in the first-half at Adams Park.

He continued: “I thought Fleetwood were great at keeping the ball.

“We don't go toe-to-toe like that.

“We know we can't.

“We know what we are.

“Once we sorted that out and we started dropping deep into our half and killing their space, we defended really, really well.

“It's about those little battles, those headers, those moments in front of your own goal that you you'll die for to defend.

“And I've got this pack that will die for each other out there."

The gaffer then praised Onyedinma with his double.

He said: “Fred Onyedinma with his two amazing goals.

“One's a gift and the other one's just pure class.

“We probably could have had one more and been a bit more comfortable.

“But I have to say that being in the play-off final four, the Championship is beyond all our wildest dreams here.

“And I'm just so proud of the boys and thankful for everyone who supported me and kept with me throughout because it's been a tough ride sometimes.

“Who would have thought would be here, stood here after what we've been through in recent years.

“It's just awesome.”

The final on Monday, July 13 will kick-off at 7.30pm.
