Speaking on the club website, Gareth Ainsworth said: “We’ve come up against Ryan many times down the years and he’s always been a strong, commanding presence in any defence we’ve faced, and also a real threat from our set-pieces with his height and heading ability.

“Our defence was the bedrock for our success last season and he’ll add real competition for places and give us another option with lots of games coming thick and fast.

“I’ve been working hard all summer on bringing Ryan to the club and I’m delighted it’s paid off.”

The 28-year-old is a product of the Southampton academy which has seen the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Luke Shaw all graduate from, but he failed to make a first-team appearance for the Saints in six years at the club.

During his time at Southampton, he had two loan spells at Salisbury City before joining Concord Rangers in 2011.

He then joined Cambridge City a year later before a return to the Football League after winning promotion with Mansfield Town in 2013.

He spent four seasons with the Nottinghamshire-based side before moving to Peterborough United in 2016.
